Dedicated in the year 2000 as The National D-Day Museum and now designated by Congress as the country's official World War II Museum, this remarkable attraction illuminates the American experience during the WWII era with moving personal stories, historic artifacts and powerful interactive displays. The museum was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The New Markets Tax Credit investment by the National New Markets Fund will be used to finance the redevelopment and expansion of this historically significant and economically catalytic business, enabling New Orleans to further strengthen its recovering tourism sector.
Since its opening in 2000, the National World War II Museum has hosted over 1.7 million visitors. Roughly 50% of the museums visitors indicated that the Museum was their number one or number two reason for visiting New Orleans.

Prior to Katrina, the National World War II Museum indirectly accounted for a total 4,315 jobs and generated $75 million in annual revenues, supplying the State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans with over $10 million and $6.8 million in annual tax revenues, respectively.
This first phase of the expansion is being built across the street from the current National World War II Museum facility and includes a 250-seat theatre that will feature state-of-the-art sound and special effects. Upon completion of the expanded campus, the Museum will serve 450,000 to 680,000 visitors per year. The Museum is located within the Warehouse District, a transitioning community converting to cultural attraction, restaurants, shops, and condos.
In support of the National World War II Museum's expansion and the overall revitalization of the surrounding neighborhood, the City of New Orleans, the region´s planning commission, and the museum are undertaking major street improvements that include moving power lines below ground, resurfacing the street, installing new brick sidewalks, historic lamp posts and lighted street trees.
