Laura Baron, CFO

Laura Baron joined SDS in 2009 as Vice President and Controller and now serves as CFO. She oversees accounting for all SDS divisions and subsidiaries and helps guide the company’s growth and strategic direction.

 

Ms. Baron developed the internal operational infrastructure to manage SDS’ National New Markets Fund, LLC, which invests federal New Markets Tax Credits into operating businesses and real-estate projects in low-income communities nationwide.  She oversees all aspects of this process, from project analysis and management to accounting and regulatory compliance.

 

Ms. Baron’s passion for community development extends beyond her work at SDS.  She began her mission-driven path as a consultant for Excellent Education, managing the New Markets Tax Credit program, acting as the CFO for charter schools, and helping vital academic organizations develop foundations to build fiscal strength.

 

Ms. Baron is a CPA and previously spent 12 years as a finance and portfolio operations executive.  She has managed more than $2 billion in assets for firms including Ryland Homes, Wilshire Associates, and Trust Company of the West.

Activities

 

Ms. Baron is passionate about helping underserved communities and participates in special projects to assist public charter schools achieve fiscal responsibility.  She was a member of the Latino Business Association, MEChA–a minority student organization promoting education, culture and history, and Alpha Kappa Psi and continues to be involved in the UCLA Trojan network.

 

Ms. Baron is an avid traveler who has toured Mexico, Canada, Western Europe, China and Central and South America.  She is half-way to her goal of visiting every state in the U.S.  She is a devoted hiker and fitness enthusiast who has completed the LA Marathon.
